How Restylane® Works: The science behind Restylane®

If you're considering a dermal filler treatment, there are a few things you should know about Restylane® and Perlane®.

Q: What are Restylane® and Perlane®?
A: Restylane® and Perlane® are cosmetic dermal fillers that restore volume and fullness to the skin to correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as the lines from your nose to the corners of your mouth (nasolabial folds).

Q: What are Restylane® and Perlane® made of?
A: Restylane® and Perlane® are made of hyaluronic acid. In the human body, natural hyaluronic acid provides volume and fullness to the skin. The hyaluronic acid in Restylane and Perlane has been modified slightly to last longer than the body's hyaluronic acid. The hyaluronic acid in Restylane and Perlane is produced by a biotechnical process.

Q: Are Restylane® and Perlane® derived from animals?
A: Restylane® and Perlane® contain no animal proteins. This limits any risk of animal-based disease transmission or allergic reactions. No allergy testing is required before use.*

Q: What should patients do prior to treatment?
A: Restylane® and Perlane® require no pre-testing. However, you should take a few precautions before being treated with Restylane or Perlane. Prior to treatment, avoid using aspirin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications, St. John's wort, or high doses of Vitamin E supplements because this may increase bruising or bleeding at the injection site. Also, if you have previously suffered from facial cold sores, discuss this with your doctor who may prescribe a medication to minimize recurrence.

Q: How are Restylane® and Perlane® different from each other?
A: Restylane® and Perlane® contain stabilized hyaluronic acid, made by the same biotechnical process. The difference is Perlane is composed of larger gel particles than Restylane and is intended for deeper injection to volumize skin for correcting facial wrinkles and folds. Your physician can best determine what is right for you.

Q: Are Restylane® and Perlane® safe?
A: Restylane® and Perlane® have well defined safety profiles. Clinical studies showed no significant differences in the safety of Restylane and Perlane. Restylane is the most used, most studied cosmetic dermal filler, and has been used in over 70 countries and in more than 1.4 million treatments in the U.S.

Q: How long do Restylane® or Perlane® last?
A: Restylane® and Perlane® are proven to deliver long-lasting results. Studies have shown that Restylane lasts for about six months. Perlane lasts at least six months in the majority of patients.* The patented stabilization technology helps maintain the cosmetic effect for those time periods.

Q: How often should I have Restylane® or Perlane® treatments?
A: How long the aesthetic correction lasts is very individual. Talk with your doctor about the benefits of scheduling an appointment in about six months.

Q: How are Restylane® or Perlane® different from Botox® Cosmetic?
A: Botox® Cosmetic and Restylane® are used to correct wrinkles in different ways. Restylane products are cosmetic fillers injected into the skin, adding volume to smooth wrinkles such as the lines from your nose to the corners of your mouth (nasolabial folds). In contrast, Botox relaxes the muscles that cause frown lines between your eyebrows.

Q: How are Restylane® or Perlane® different from bovine collagen products?
A: Restylane® and Perlane® contain no animal proteins. Restylane and Perlane do not require an allergy test and can be administered immediately, so there is no waiting for treatments. (This limits any risk of animal-based disease transmission or allergic reaction.) Restylane and Perlane contain trace amounts of gram-positive bacterial proteins and are contraindicated for patients with a history of allergies to such material.

Q: Do the injections hurt?
A: Restylane® and Perlane® are injected directly into the skin in small amounts by an ultrafine needle. As with all injections, some patients may experience discomfort. To increase your comfort, your doctor will assess your need for pain management and determine which technique is right for you.

Q: How much do Restylane® or Perlane® treatments cost?
A: A Restylane® or Perlane® procedure is customized to your specific needs, so the cost will vary from patient to patient. In general, the cost of Restylane and Perlane treatment is comparable to the cost of similar procedures. However, because Restylane and Perlane provide long-lasting results of about six months, they may prove to be very economical over the long term. Ask your doctor to give a cost estimate based on your particular needs.

If you want to enjoy a smoother, more youthful appearance for about six months, ask your physician if Restylane® or Perlane® is right for you.
